CBD for seizures and epilepsy

For many people who suffer from epilepsy, and seizures triggered by other factors, the use of CBD for seizures is fast gaining acceptance and even endorsement from the medical field.

Despite the growing number of anti-seizure medications, as many as one-third of patients with epilepsy still continue to suffer from seizures. In many of these cases, surgery is also an option, but this is also not always a preferred or effective treatment. This ‘treatment gap’ has led to a great deal of research into alternatives, particularly into options which are non-invasive and non-addictive in nature.

In studies conducted between 2014 and 2018, researchers were able to show highly consistent results – with an average 50% reduction in seizures among the participants purely as a result of taking CBD as the only means of treatment. This is particularly remarkable, because these results were achieved within the first few doses of CBD being administered, and the efficiency of the treatment remained stable throughout the 12–14-week duration of these studies. This means that unlike many pharmaceutical preparations, which sometimes require increased dosage, CBD delivers a consistent benefit with the same dosage throughout.

The use of CBD for epilepsy is rapidly gaining acceptance, with the number of published studies increasing by more than ten times in the past decade, and many medical practitioners now endorsing its use.

CBD has been shown to have powerful anticonvulsive properties, with the first actual medical report on this effect published in 1843, after it was used to treat animals and infants suffering from seizures. During the twentieth century, studies on CBD declined due to its association with cannabis, but as cannabis use became decriminalized across many countries, and as CBD gained recognition as a non-hallucinogenic and non-addictive compound, interest in its efficiency has become universal.

Extensive evidence has now accumulated to demonstrate that CBD plays an important role in synaptic transmission within the brain, and that it assists in the regulation of neuronal firing – in other words, regulating and reducing the number of ‘short circuits’ within the brain which trigger seizures.

This does not mean that CBD for seizures should replace conventional treatment, but if used in conjunction with existing treatments, can make an enormous difference to the quality of life of people who suffer from epilepsy and seizures.
