Substance abuse is an illness that can be difficult to treat effectively, but the use of CBD for substance abuse therapy is an area of study that is fast gaining traction.

One of the greatest challenges in treating substance abuse sufferers is that it often requires a multidisciplinary approach. Addiction is not only a physical affliction, but is often also psychological in nature. The interaction between psychological behavior triggers and physiological response can be incredibly intricate.

Because of this, treatment for substance abuse most often involves sweeping changes in behavior and habit patterns, as well as the administration of medication which may help reduce impulsive behavior. Substance cravings are often amplified by stress and other psychological conditions which are difficult to regulate without the use of pharmaceuticals. The most common result of these impulses is repeated relapse in substance-dependent individuals, with the onset of cravings driven by behavioral triggers.

Several studies have provided encouraging results that point toward the effectiveness of CBD in regulating addictive behavior, increasing impulse control, and reducing anxiety among subjects who were studied.
One of the most prominent addictive substances in modern society are opioids, and unfortunately, many of the medications which help with the treatment of other addictions are opioid based – which makes them unsuitable for use.

However, the use of CBD may offer advantages that cannot easily be replicated with the administration of regular medication. This is due to the fact that CBD has no addictive properties, while aiding and regulating the nervous system so that anxiety and impulsive behavior is significantly reduced.

The option of using CBD to help recovery from substance abuse is rapidly gaining acceptance in medical circles. In one particular study conducted in 2019 on individuals recovering from heroin addiction, researchers found that CBD significantly aided recovery and that the effects of the CBD dosage administered to subjects did not decrease over time. It was reported that although an initial dose of CBD was given for 3 consecutive days, the beneficial effects persisted for up to 7 days after beginning the treatment.

Most importantly, it has been conclusively demonstrated that CBD does not carry any potential for addiction or abuse, making it a safe and natural method of assisting recovery without any risks or side effects. And, perhaps just as importantly, CBD has been shown to reduce inflammation, stress, and brain hyperactivity, which means that using CBD for substance abuse treatment can be a powerful tool in aiding long-term behavioral change in individuals recovering from substance abuse.
