For Dogs

Can you give CBD to your dog?

One of the most frequent CBD-related questions comes from the pet community and focuses on the advisability of CBD for dogs.

Does your dog suffer from chronic pain, restless or anxious behaviour, or seizures? CBD products may offer relief just as effectively – and more safely – than many medications that are prescribed for these conditions.

The good news is that CBD is an all-natural, safe, and effective method of helping your dog deal with chronic pain, nausea, anxiety, and a host of other ailments, without any significant side effects or causes for concern. Naturally, an animal’s physiology differs in several respects to that of a human, but when it comes to CBD, the manner in which this plant-based compound interacts with your dog’s body is virtually identical to that of a human.

Part of the reason for this is that CBD shares important metabolic pathways with a class of drugs called NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These metabolic pathways and processes control many healthy functions within the body, including the prevention of inflammation and blood clotting. Many drugs commonly used to treat pain and inflammation, like Ibuprofen and Rimadyl, are NSAIDs, but they need to be used with great care, because they can lead to unwanted side effects.

CBD, on the other hand, provides many of the same health-preserving benefits, while also serving to regulate mood, increase contentment, and relieve stress – as well as providing a significant level of protection against more dramatic health concerns in your dog, such as arthritis, dementia, seizures, and even cancer.

Statistically, one in every four dogs will develop arthritis during their lifetime – and having a natural and effective treatment at hand goes a long way toward relieving the pain and distress this causes, while also helping to prevent further deterioration.

IVDD, or Intra-Vertebral Disc Displacement, is another extremely common ailment that every pet owner dreads – a condition where a ruptured or displaced spinal disc can lead to debilitating pain and paralysis. In many cases, IVDD can be treated, either with surgery, or prolonged rest, but in both cases, pain management is a key to recovery. Again, CBD products not only dramatically reduce pain, but also induce calmness and reduce the stress this causes.

So, if it works so well, is CBD safe for dogs? Researchers and veterinarians generally agree that not only is it incredibly safe, but it can also be taken in conjunction with other medications, without the risk of adverse side effects. And, as with humans, the only noticeable side effect is increased drowsiness in certain cases.

In the case of very serious disease, like cancer, CBD has also proven itself to be of enormous value in treating dogs who are in pain as a result of the cancer. There is some preliminary evidence that CBD may even be capable of killing cancer cells, but these studies are not definitive enough yet to be able to make such a claim. However, in the case of a serious illness like cancer, CBD will certainly do no harm – and may just be the very best thing you can do for your best friend.

So, CBD for dogs is not only safe, but a natural, highly effective option for any pet owner.
