Illness, disease, and the benefits of CBD

Despite it being so incredibly useful for a number of different applications, using CBD to treat illness is possibly the most talked-about and the most important area of interest for many people. This is because CBD is amazingly universal in it’s potential use: from alleviating chronic depression or anxiety, to aiding with the management of diseases like diabetes and epilepsy, and even pain reduction and symptom reduction in diseases like cancer, CBD is cementing its reputation as a truly remarkable, all-natural supplement.

Of course, this does not mean that CBD is a miracle cure, or that it replaces responsible medical care: in the case of illness or disease, we strongly urge you to consult with your physician or healthcare provider as a first course of action in order to obtain a professional diagnosis and qualified medical advice.

However, once you are aware of the status of any health concern, it’s a very good idea to consider using CBD as a supplement for the management of pain, anxiety, and a host of other issues.

So, how does CBD work, and what is it exactly?

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a substance which has been extracted from the Marijuana plant, Cannabis Sativa. However, it’s not the same as Cannabis itself, and is distinct from THC, the other active compound in Marijuana that produces a narcotic effect. Because of that, CBD is not a drug, but is instead a natural regulator of certain processes within the human body. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is a key part of human physiology which is responsible for regulating the metabolism, reducing pain, supporting the immune system, and reducing inflammation, among many other tasks.

CBD helps the body’s endocannabinoid system to function properly – so, to put it simply, it provides more of the chemical ‘messengers’ that your body already uses to maintain a state of great health. On top of that, it generally does so without any harmful side effects, while also increasing the production of serotonin, a hormone produced in your brain which increases calmness and increases happiness.

How CBD relieves symptoms of illness

Although it’s still too early for researchers to make extraordinary claims for the effectiveness of CBD, some studies have produced startling results. For example, Harvard Medical School has published the results of a study which focused on childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. These are serious conditions which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications – yet, in numerous trials, CBD significantly reduced the number of seizures, and, in some cases, it was able to prevent or stop them altogether.

As a result of these studies, the FDA issued a press release when they recently approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.

In other studies, conducted in Europe, CBD was shown to dramatically reduce pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, simply by being applied to the skin – and there is currently a great deal of research around the concept of using CBD to treat illness.

Whether it’s pain relief, reduction of inflammation, treatment of many common disease symptoms, or the management of stress and anxiety, our CBD products may be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
